The Annuity Truth
An educational resource about annuities, fixed indexed annuities, retirement income, and the tradeoffs that matter before you make a decision. We exist to help people approaching or living in retirement understand what annuities actually are — and what they're not.
Understand the Tradeoffs. Then Decide.
This is not an annuity sales page. It is also not an anti-annuity site. The central idea is simple: you cannot intelligently decide whether you like annuities until you understand which type of annuity you're talking about.
“Annuity” describes a broad category of insurance contracts. Different annuity types have different objectives, mechanics, guarantees, risks, liquidity provisions, and tradeoffs. Our role is to explain those differences plainly.
We are willing to say something an annuity salesperson might hesitate to say: sometimes an annuity is the wrong answer. That willingness is the foundation of the credibility we're trying to earn.
Our Editorial Approach
Each answer page is built around a single question and leads with a short answer near the top, so a reader can get the core point before the detail. From there, the page develops the explanation with plain language, defines the terms it uses, and names the tradeoffs rather than hiding them.
We describe what a product can do and what it can't, what you may gain and what you may give up. We avoid simplistic claims like “market upside with no downside” and explain the actual crediting mechanics instead. We do not call any product “the best of both worlds” — we explain the trade instead.
We do not attack stocks, Wall Street, financial advisors, or people who prefer investing. The thing worth pushing back against is making a major retirement decision without understanding the tradeoffs.
Sources & References
Where a page makes a consequential or regulated claim, we link to the relevant primary source near the explanation rather than relying only on a reference list at the bottom. We prioritize primary and authoritative references — such as the SEC's Investor.gov, FINRA, the NAIC, and the IRS where tax rules are discussed.
We do not fabricate citations, statistics, return histories, rates, or guarantees. If a source has not been verified, the references area is left as a structural placeholder rather than filled with an invented link. Each external source is linked under its actual name and URL.
Edited financial pages on this site are treated as drafts pending qualified human review. A “last updated” date marks when a page was edited — it does not imply that the page has been professionally reviewed.
How Corrections Are Handled
If you find an error in a page — a factual mistake, an imprecise claim, or a broken source link — we want to know. Corrections are made to the page directly, and the “last updated” date reflects when the edit was made.
Where a correction changes a substantive claim, we aim to fix the wording rather than leave a contradictory statement in place. We do not claim a review or verification process that does not exist; pages are edited as issues are identified.
A Service, Separate From the Education
TheAnnuityTruth.com publishes educational content. That publishing is separate from the Retirement Income Review, which is a service offered through this site.
The review is intended to help you discuss retirement income needs, liquidity, risk preferences, and whether an annuity may have a role. Any recommendation should depend on your circumstances and the terms of the products considered.
We do not make claims here about the review provider's independence, fiduciary status, compensation, or sales incentives until verified information is supplied. The details below will be completed once confirmed.
Details about who conducts the review, their qualifications, the duration and cost, and the follow-up process will be provided here once verified.
How Your Information Is Used
When you request a Retirement Income Review, the information you submit is used to arrange and conduct the review. We will link a full privacy policy here once it is published rather than describe practices that have not been confirmed.
A privacy policy describing how your information is handled will be linked here once published.
Before You Choose a Product, Define the Job.
